Sumac
(Rhus coriaria)
Family: Anacardiaceae
Native to Mediterranean areas, especially Sicily and southern Italy,
and parts of the Middle East, including Iran. A member of the cashew
family with pinnately compound leaves turning to brilliant colors in
autumn, dioecious flowers, and clusters of berries. Sumac is an essential
ingredient in Arabic cooking, preferred to lemon for its sourness and
astringency.
