Star
Anise
[also Chinese Anise, Aniseed Stars, Badian or Badiana]
(Illicium verum)
Family: Magnoliaceae
Native to China, this small star-shaped seed comes from a tree related
to the magnolia. Star Anise is named from the stellate form of its fruit.
It is sometimes chewed after a meal to promote digestion and sweeten
the breath. It is frequently used in Asian and Oriental cooking, especially
with beef, chicken or lamb. Star Anise contains the same essential oils
as Anise, and in China it is used for seasoning dishes, especially sweets.
In Japan the tree is planted in temples and on tombs, and the pounded
bark is used as incense.
