Nutmeg
(Myristica fragrans)
Family: Myristicaceae
Native to the Moluccas (the Spice Islands) and the nutmeg tree is now
also cultivated in the West Indies. The tree produces two spices: mace
and nutmeg. Nutmeg is the seed kernel inside the fruit and mace is the
lacy covering (aril) on the kernel. The aromatic compounds of nutmeg
are used to flavor eggnog, baked goods, and a wide variety of foods,
